this year.
Spelling Ideas/Activities
Spelling Bingo
Give each student a bingo card with five squares going across and five squares going down, totaling 25 individual squares. Designate the center square a "free space". Call out the 24 spelling words. As you call out the words, students spell the words in random boxes(one word in each square). After calling out all 24 spelling words, give clues about each word. For example, if "island" is one of the spelling words, you could say, "land completely surrounded by water." When student find the spelling words on their cards, they should mark the squares. When a student marks five consecutive squares (across, down, or diagonal), the student may say "Bingo!" Ask the student to spell each of the five (or four if they used the free space) words aloud and, if correct, declare the student Spelling bingo champion of the week. Reward Spelling Bingo champions with stickers, pencils, etc.
Spelling Scramble This is a fun game for students to do in groups. Open this link to access your set of letter cards. Print or photocopy five sets. Cut out each letter card. Now you're ready! Divide your class into five groups. Give each group a set of cards. Call out a spelling word. The first team to spell the word correctly with their cards receives two points. Each additional team that spells the word correctly receives one point. After all the spelling words are called, the team with the most points wins!
